Lutherstadt Wittenberg is a historic town on the River Elbe in Saxony‑Anhalt, Germany, best known as the birthplace of the Protestant Reformation. Its preserved medieval center contains several buildings directly linked to Martin Luther and his circle, which together form the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Luther Memorials in Eisleben and Wittenberg.” These include the Castle Church where Luther posted his 95 Theses in 1517, the Town Church where he preached, the Lutherhaus where he lived and worked, and the Melanchthonhaus, home of his collaborator Philipp Melanchthon. The city played a central role in shaping European religious and political history, and today it remains a major cultural destination with museums, monuments, and well‑preserved Renaissance architecture
