    The Hawaiian Islands, the latest of the great Pacific archipelagos to be discovered (Cook, 1778), are as original in their physical aspects (a climate very favorable to man, enormous basaltic volcanoes such as Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano in the world) as they are in their history, in the diversity of their population, and in their remarkable economic prosperity based on their integration into the United States, of which they have been the fiftieth (and only non-continental) state since 1959. The Hawaiian Islands, with a population of little more than one million, occupy a considerable geopolitical position at the beginning of the 21st century and are asserting themselves both as the nodal point of American influence in the Pacific and as a cultural bridge between East and West.
