Beautiful Bruges

Beautiful Bruges
Thank you Parisse for the nice card  sent 3 -11 -2021

Bruges is home of historical, artistic and architectural wonders. The museums are overflowing with works of art from the Flemish Primitives to the great contemporary artists. In the city center, there are monasteries and beautiful residences such as the perfectly preserved Hof Bladelin. Bruges was a textile center in the 13th century, and although today the city is a major tourist destination, it has retained its medieval charm with its many canals and richly decorated houses. The historic district, which is only accessible on foot, is bristling with arrows and gothic flourishes. The friendly inhabitants of the capital of West Flanders have no trouble impressing tourists, as they are proud to show off their city's best features, such as the Groeninge Museum, the Church of Our Lady, the Belfry and the Market Hall.

München

Thanks to Stefan for the card , sent 01.11.2021

Munich (München in German) means "home of the monks", a name that stems from the Benedictine monastery founded in the area around the mid-8th century. While there is evidence of settlements in the area dating back to the Neolithic period, and the wider region of Bavaria has a history entwined in the Roman Empire, the first time that Munich was mentioned by in a document was in 1158, and this date is generally accepted as its foundation.

Schones WEIMAR

Schones WEIMAR
Thanks to Sylvia for the nice card sent March 2021.
A residential city in the center of Europe where ideas and works of art were born that have spread throughout the world. Today the famous names of the past still resound: Goethe and Schiller. Bach and Liszt. Modernity and the Bauhaus. Wide open spaces, open squares and narrow streets, the houses of Goethe and Schiller, museums and castles - the history of European culture concentrated in a very small area and honored by UNESCO with a World Heritage Site.

However, Weimar remains true to its identity today. Vibrant, dynamic and internationally oriented - visitors discover art and culture, music and history, light music and young creativity with enthusiasm. Alongside all the splendors of the city of culture, places of remembrance remind us of the dark times in Weimar's history. The Ettersberg memorial is dedicated to presenting the atrocities of the Buchenwald concentration camp and the depths of social exclusion and violence.

LEON LAS MEDULAS

LEON LAS MEDULAS
Thanks estrellacards, sent 24.2.2021

In the Bierzo, northwest of the Aquilanos Mountains and near the valley of the Sil River, lies Las Médulas, a fantastic landscape resulting from Roman gold mining. It is probably the largest gold mine dug by the Romans in their empire and is declared World Heritage by UNESCO.

Its reddish image hides a sinuous landscape of mystery. Nobody would say that these steep rocks bury, in their bowels, the gold of the Romans.

The mining stopped centuries ago, the site of Medulas becomes a beautiful landscape, very attractive from the tourist point of view, which is completed by the museum infrastructure of an archaeological workshop. It describes, in detail, the period of full activity of the largest open-air gold mining in the Roman Empire.

The Medulas offer to the visitor, beyond a landscape of extraordinary beauty, the possibility of knowing a curious and complex system of exploitation that the Roman geographer and naturalist, Pliny the Elder, will call 'ruina montium'.

Thanks to CN-Jun for the nice card , sent 09.march.2021 (Direct Swap)

As the name suggests, it is located in China and the Great Wall is the collective name given to a series of fortification systems built across the borders of the country. The purpose of the Great Wall was to protect as well as mark the territories of the Chinese states and empires. Several of the walls were found to have been built as early as the 7th century BC, but the most well known sections were built by the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). An archaeological survey found that the entire wall with all of its branches measures out to be 21,196 km. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987, and attracts many visitors every year.

Lutherstadt Wittenberg

Thanks to Sylvia for the nice card.

The Luther memorials in Wittenberg were recognized as World Heritage Sites in December 1996, because they "represent a significant milestone in human history and are of outstanding universal significance as authentic sites of the Reformation." The Schlosskirche (Castle Church), Lutherhaus (Luther House), Stadtkirche (City Church) and Melanchthonhaus (Melanchthon House) are part of the heritage.
Wittenberg was the center of his reformation activities, and the castle church, in whose portal he posted his 95 Theses on October 31, 1517, later became his final resting place, as well as that of Phillip Melanchthon, one of his closest followers.

Riga

Thanks to Llze for the nice card ans stamp , sent 25 NOV 2021

The historic centre of Riga was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. Many medieval buildings survive, among them the 13th-century Riga Dom (cathedral), the 14th-century Riga Castle (1330), and merchants’ homes and warehouses. The canal around the city’s Old Town was the fortress moat. Nearby, many elaborate facades in the Jugendstil artistic style testify to Riga’s wealth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among the public buildings that were renovated in the 1990s was the National Opera, first built as the Riga German Theatre in 1863. The 14th-century House of Blackheads, damaged during World War II and razed in 1954, was rebuilt in 2000. Early 21st-century construction included high-rise towers, a hockey stadium that hosted the 2006 Ice Hockey World Championship, and the National Library, completed 2013.

Lake Erie lies on the north, Pennsylvania on the east, West Virginia and Kentucky on the southeast and south, Indiana on the west, and Michigan on the northwest. Ohio ranks 34th in terms of total area among the 50 states, and it is one of the smallest states west of the Appalachian Mountains. The state ranks near the top, however, in population. Ohio’s capital, after being located in Chillicothe and Zanesville during the early years of statehood, was finally established in newly founded and centrally located Columbus in 1816. The state takes its name from the Ohio River, which in turn traces its name to an Iroquoian word meaning “great water.”

Mechernich eifel

mechernich eifel

Thanks to Regina for the wonderful card from Germany , sent 01/11/2021

The Eifel is a region in Germany that boasts some of the loveliest fairy tale towns and medieval castles in the country. Overlooked by most foreign travelers, this region is one of Germany’s best kept secrets. The Eifel is largely rural and quiet, characterized by agriculture, farmland, and woodlands. Sprinkled between pastures of grazing cows and thick forests, you’ll see tiny towns, in which the most prominent buildings are the churches.

The Eifel is also a low mountain range in eastern Belgium and western Germany. In Germany, the Eifel region borders Belgium, the Moselle River, the Rhine River. If you’re looking at a map, it encompasses the area between Aachen, Trier and Koblenz, in the states of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia. Geologically, this region was shaped by volcanic activity. Although the last volcano erupted about 10,000 years ago, evidence of the Eifel’s turbulent past can be seen in the crater lakes, called maars, that pepper the Vulkaneifel landscape.

There are different ways to enjoy this area. For nature enthusiasts, there are tons of gentle trails and wildlife parks. You can hike a stage of the 313 kilometer Eifelsteig trail, or visit the Eifel National Park. For architecture admirers, there are beautiful castles and medieval towns to visit. And for those who want a respite from a busy travel schedule, the Eifel has several thermal bath (Therme) destinations.

The Eifel also encompasses the Ahr Valley (Ahrtal) and parts of the Moselle Valley (Mosel).

MAPUCHE (HOMBRES DE LA TIERRA) - TRAIGUEN

MAPUCHE (HOMBRES DE LA TIERRA) - TRAIGUEN
Special Thanks to Carolina for the wonderful card.sent  August 2021.

The Mapuche (people of the land in Mapudungun) have historically inhabited the valleys of Central and Southern Chile and Southern Argentina. During colonial times, the Spaniards knew the Mapuche as Araucanos (Araucanians in English), term that is now considered pejorative. The Mapuche are a diverse ethnicity composed of various groups that share a common social, religious, and economic structure, as well as a common linguistic heritage. Each group has a distinctive name regarding the region they live in. It is believed that Mapuches first inhabited the valleys between the Itata and Toltén Rivers in Chile. In the early 15th century, Mapuches fought the Inca invaders from Peru, stopping the expansion of the Inca Empire toward the south. After the arrival of the Spaniards, Mapuches began expanding eastward into the Andes and pampas forming, with the native people, the Pehuenche (people of the Pehuén, the Araucaria's fruit).
