Canada

Thanks to LYNDAC for the postcard , sent 31 july 2013.

Canada is a North American country located between the United States to the south and the Arctic Circle to the north. The main cities are Toronto, Vancouver, the center of West Coast cinema, Montreal and Quebec City, both French-speaking, and Ottawa, the capital. Canada's vast wilderness includes Banff National Park with its many lakes in the Rocky Mountains. It is also home to the famous and majestic Niagara Falls.

    Aboriginal peoples and communities

Canada's aboriginal people are the original occupants of the land that is now Canada and their             descendants. Recent archaeological digs have revealed remains dating back 30,000 years. Some of         these peoples would have reached the continent by crossing the Bering Strait from Eastern Siberia in      Asia to Alaska.

HAWAII

Thank you CONNIE for theis amzing shot of HAWAII , sent 03 JUN 2013.

The Hawaiian Islands, the latest of the great Pacific archipelagos to be discovered (Cook, 1778), are as original in their physical aspects (a climate very favorable to man, enormous basaltic volcanoes such as Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, the largest active volcano in the world) as they are in their history, in the diversity of their population, and in their remarkable economic prosperity based on their integration into the United States, of which they have been the fiftieth (and only non-continental) state since 1959. The Hawaiian Islands, with a population of little more than one million, occupy a considerable geopolitical position at the beginning of the 21st century and are asserting themselves both as the nodal point of American influence in the Pacific and as a cultural bridge between East and West.

Thank you Vens from this postcard  sent 31 JUL 2013.

Las Croabas, Puerto Rico, is a small fishing community not far from San Juan. Set on the northeastern tip of the island, the waters around Las Croabas offer their own unique attractions when they’re brought to life after the sun goes down. Along with watery excursions, Las Croabas makes a good launch point to visit a nearby natural reserve and rain forest.

It creates the illusion of two different, smaller suns beside the sun — with rings around them. It’s a rare meteorological phenomenon, especially when the ring is full.

AROZONA THE GRAND CANYON STATE

Special Thanks to NORTHCOTE  for the map card sent 19 NOV.

A land of Native American and Spanish origins before becoming a state of the United States, the word Arizona has different translations. In the Indian language Arizona translates to "little spring" and in Spanish Arizona comes from the Spanish árida zona, "dry area". The United States took Arizona from Mexico after the Mexican-American War in 1848; Arizona officially became the 48th state of the United States on February 14, 1912. Located in the southwestern part of the United States, let's discover the West!

One of the most famous sites in this vast region is the Grand Canyon. It was dug with the current of the Colorado River. It has an average depth of 1 300m and a width ranging from 5.5 to 30 km. These dimensions make it one of the most impressive sites in Arizona.

The City of Phoenix

Phoenix, the capital of Arizona, is a city with a peaceful atmosphere and a dry, warm climate. Its proximity to the Sonora Desert and its temperatures have earned it the nickname "Sun City".

This (state) capital has many cultural sites to visit but also a lot of activities.

The must-see park in the city is Papago Park. It offers several activities such as the Desert Botanical Garden (21,000 plants), the famous Phoenix Zoo, as well as a huge golf course, this site has something to delight the whole family!

The city of Phoenix has several museums, but the most popular museums are the Heard Museum (Native American arts) and the Phoenix Art Museum.

There are also many sports activities to enjoy with family and friends. For the more athletic, Mount Camelback is a must-see. Rising to 825 meters, it is part of the Echo Canyon recreational area but is reserved for experienced climbers!

Let's not forget one last heritage... gastronomic this time: the cuisine! Indeed, because of its history and the strong Hispanic presence, the city of Phoenix offers a large choice of restaurants and cuisines. Take advantage of a lunch break to taste the authentic Mexican cuisine for example, but beware of the spices!

Lisboa

The wonderful card sent by my friend Simona from ROMANIA.Many Thanks

Lisbon is one of the oldest European cities and was founded by the Phoenicians under the name of Olissipo and was conquered soon after by the Greeks and Carthaginians. Eventually, Lisbon became the capital of Roman Lusitania.  After the fall of the Roman Empire, the city became part of the Suevi Kingdom of Galicia until 585.

Lisbon, Arab-Berber Muslim city

In 714, Lisbon became Muslim. The city passed under the domination of the Umayyads of Damascus and then the Berber Almoravids, whose capital was Marrakech. To know more about the political evolution of the Islamic empire.

A part of the inhabitants converted to Islam, which removed them from the tax without opening them any possibilities of social evolution. Non-Muslims, Christians and Jews were subjected to a tax.

The city regained its splendor and by 900 was one of the most populous cities in Europe along with Constantinople, Salonika, Seville and Cordoba with a population of about 100,000.

TIKAL,GUATMALA

Tikal, Temple II GUATEMALA
Tikal Temple II

Special Thanks to ALEJANDRA,the card was sent 22 APR 2014.

The card shows Tikal, Temple II

A name which makes dream the travelers in search of exploration and nature...
Two syllables that make all archaeologists and specialists of the Mayan world fantasize...
Five letters which raise many mysteries still unsolved...
And for good reason. Tikal, the Mayan city, is sumptuous, imposing. Some 3,000 structures emerge from the tropical forest in a mystical atmosphere. The temple of the great jaguar faces the temple of the masks on the big square, the neuralgic center of the city. The highest pyramids of the site overhang the jungle at 70 meters of the ground.

The site is so vast that one often has the impression of being alone, taking oneself for a moment for Indiana Jones when he discovers a secret temple in the bend of a path. One wonders how the Maya could have developed such a big city in a so thick jungle.

Since 1979, Tikal is one of the rare sites to be registered with the cultural inheritance as well as the natural inheritance of UNESCO.

NIAGARA FALLS

NIAGARA FALLS
This card sent on  4,March 2013 by Maria . Thank you so much .

Niagara Falls was formed starting more than 12,000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age when large torrents of water were released from the melting ice, draining into the Niagara River. The water plunged over the edge of the Niagara Escarpment – to what is now known as Lewiston, NY. Eventually, the force of the water wore away the rock layers and Niagara Falls moved upstream, reaching its present location. Year after year, the formation continues with the annual freezing and thawing of the Niagara River, along with gradual erosion and periodic rock-falls. Remedial work has been completed to preserve the Falls and the volume of water has been reduced by diversion for hydroelectric power..
