Malerisches Salzkammergut

 Thanks Thomas  sent 15/07/2021

Gmunden is not a big city by any stretch of the imagination, but neither is it a sleepy village in the mountains.
Gmunden is more...

A town with culture and flair, romantic and lively at the same time. A place full of charm and contrasts; a place for exuberant hours and quiet moments.
Its unique location on the shores of Lake Traunsee, surrounded by mountains, together with its cultural past, offers a special flair. Filming location of the TV series "Schlosshotel Orth"!

This lively town with its southern charm has lost none of its appeal since it was designated a spa town (1862). Its unique location on the shores of Lake Traunsee, surrounded by mountains, together with its cultural past, offers a special flair.
Whether life, culture, nature, sports or leisure. You may calmly expect a lot.

Berlin: the city of all possibilities

No one is supposed to be unaware that the Berlin Television Tower - Berliner Fernsehturm - is 365 meters tall and the tallest building in Berlin. Legend has it that the height of the tower was decided by Walter Ulbricht, leader of the GDR's Communist Party, so that every child could remember that it corresponded to the number of days in the year. In fact, the tower now measures 368 m at its top.

The roof of Europe

Construction of the East German transmitter began in the 1950s and the tower, erected between 1965 and 1969, was designed to be the tallest in Europe, just behind the Moscow Television Tower. It was designed by the East German architects Fritz Dieter, Günter Franke and Werner Ahrendt.

A panoramic view

For East Berlin, a separate television broadcasting system was a necessity during the years of division and the fact that it was built exactly in the center of the city was an original idea of Ulbricht. It remains the only single-city TV tower in Europe. An extremely popular attraction for tourists and Berliners alike, it welcomes more than a million visitors a year. The elevator reaches an altitude of 200 m in 40 seconds. The observation platform is 203 meters above sea level and the telecafé is 207 meters above sea level. The restaurant, equipped with a rotating ring, offers coffee, snacks and meals at reasonable prices, while the platform completes a full rotation every 60 .

Beethoven : misunderstood genius, deaf composer... Who was he?

Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, Germany in December 1770 and died on March 26, 1827 in Vienna, Austria. From an early age, his father, himself a musician, dreamed of making him a Mozart and would have forced him to practice the keyboard from the age of four or five. Even if the young Ludwig was not a child prodigy, he showed excellent musical abilities. In 1787, with the help of Prince Maximilian Franz, Beethoven went to Vienna, the musical capital of the time. There he met Mozart, but little is known of their meeting. When his mother died on July 17, 1787, his father sank into alcoholism, Beethoven had to take care of his two brothers. Beethoven returned to Vienna in 1792 to complete his musical education. He took lessons from Haydn, then from Albrechtsberger and Salieri. Three years later, Beethoven gave his first public performances, playing his own compositions and gaining some success with members of the aristocracy. The young composer was also known for his fiery and impulsive temperament.

Simon in North Wales

Simon in North Wales
Thanks to Susan for the nice card.

The beautiful Ogwen Valley, or Dyffryn Ogwen in Welsh, is part of the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales. Surrounded by towering mountains, this vast glacial valley is also dotted with tranquil lakes and historic towns with an industrial heritage. It is the ideal starting point for hiking in the Snowdonia mountains and discovering some of North Wales' most beautiful attractions.

Aber Falls is a waterfall located about 3 km south of the village of Abergwyngregyn, Gwynedd, Wales.     The waterfall is formed as the Afon Goch plunges about 120 feet (37 m) over a sill of igneous rock in the foothills of the Carneddau range. Two tributaries merge; the enlarged stream is known as Afon Rhaeadr Fawr; from the road bridge, Bont Newydd ("New Bridge"), the name becomes Afon Aber.

Penrhyn slate quarry  is an open pit slate quarry located near the town of Bethesda in the Gwynedd region of Wales.

Afon caseg river in north-west Wales draining from some of the greatest peaks in Snowdonia before discharging to the sea on the eastern side of Bangor, Gwynedd.

Beaumaris Castle  on the island of Anglesey is famous as the greatest castle never built. It was the last of the royal strongholds created by Edward I in Wales – and perhaps his masterpiece.

Everyone loves Beddgelert and its enviable location. The picturesque stone-built village is the ideal base for exploring all the classic sights and beauty spots – Aberglaslyn Pass to the south, Nant Gwynant to the east, Snowdon to the north.
