Beautiful Bruges

Beautiful Bruges
Thank you Parisse for the nice card  sent 3 -11 -2021

Bruges is home of historical, artistic and architectural wonders. The museums are overflowing with works of art from the Flemish Primitives to the great contemporary artists. In the city center, there are monasteries and beautiful residences such as the perfectly preserved Hof Bladelin. Bruges was a textile center in the 13th century, and although today the city is a major tourist destination, it has retained its medieval charm with its many canals and richly decorated houses. The historic district, which is only accessible on foot, is bristling with arrows and gothic flourishes. The friendly inhabitants of the capital of West Flanders have no trouble impressing tourists, as they are proud to show off their city's best features, such as the Groeninge Museum, the Church of Our Lady, the Belfry and the Market Hall.

München

Thanks to Stefan for the card , sent 01.11.2021

Munich (München in German) means "home of the monks", a name that stems from the Benedictine monastery founded in the area around the mid-8th century. While there is evidence of settlements in the area dating back to the Neolithic period, and the wider region of Bavaria has a history entwined in the Roman Empire, the first time that Munich was mentioned by in a document was in 1158, and this date is generally accepted as its foundation.

Schones WEIMAR

Schones WEIMAR
Thanks to Sylvia for the nice card sent March 2021.
A residential city in the center of Europe where ideas and works of art were born that have spread throughout the world. Today the famous names of the past still resound: Goethe and Schiller. Bach and Liszt. Modernity and the Bauhaus. Wide open spaces, open squares and narrow streets, the houses of Goethe and Schiller, museums and castles - the history of European culture concentrated in a very small area and honored by UNESCO with a World Heritage Site.

However, Weimar remains true to its identity today. Vibrant, dynamic and internationally oriented - visitors discover art and culture, music and history, light music and young creativity with enthusiasm. Alongside all the splendors of the city of culture, places of remembrance remind us of the dark times in Weimar's history. The Ettersberg memorial is dedicated to presenting the atrocities of the Buchenwald concentration camp and the depths of social exclusion and violence.

LEON LAS MEDULAS

LEON LAS MEDULAS
Thanks estrellacards, sent 24.2.2021

In the Bierzo, northwest of the Aquilanos Mountains and near the valley of the Sil River, lies Las Médulas, a fantastic landscape resulting from Roman gold mining. It is probably the largest gold mine dug by the Romans in their empire and is declared World Heritage by UNESCO.

Its reddish image hides a sinuous landscape of mystery. Nobody would say that these steep rocks bury, in their bowels, the gold of the Romans.

The mining stopped centuries ago, the site of Medulas becomes a beautiful landscape, very attractive from the tourist point of view, which is completed by the museum infrastructure of an archaeological workshop. It describes, in detail, the period of full activity of the largest open-air gold mining in the Roman Empire.

The Medulas offer to the visitor, beyond a landscape of extraordinary beauty, the possibility of knowing a curious and complex system of exploitation that the Roman geographer and naturalist, Pliny the Elder, will call 'ruina montium'.

The Great Wall of China

The Great Wall
Thanks to CN-Jun for the nice card , sent 09.march.2021 (Direct Swap)

As the name suggests, it is located in China and the Great Wall is the collective name given to a series of fortification systems built across the borders of the country. The purpose of the Great Wall was to protect as well as mark the territories of the Chinese states and empires. Several of the walls were found to have been built as early as the 7th century BC, but the most well known sections were built by the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). An archaeological survey found that the entire wall with all of its branches measures out to be 21,196 km. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987, and attracts many visitors every year.
